Sometimes there are concepts that everyone has heard of, knows what they are, but haven’t been sufficiently contemplated or fully understood. Like “home”… What is home? What images come to mind or what feelings does it evoke within us?
The field of psychology enjoys attributing meaning to words, metaphors, descriptions, and expressions. With these meanings, it attempts to explain people’s inner worlds and identify problems. That’s precisely why the meaning of this word helps us understand and become aware of some of the concepts within our inner world.
A home is a place where one resides, a secure space that protects us from risks; sometimes it consists of immediate family, other times it includes extended family. Some people travel from country to country, city to city, generating a new home wherever they go. However it may be, it is an indispensable aspect of humanity. A home, which holds such a significant place in our lives, should make us feel something. When I turn inward to my inner world, the first feeling I sense are peace and security. I remember the pleasant and enjoyable times I spent playing with my siblings, my sister, and brother. Gratitude towards my supportive family, who instilled hope for the future, is added to these feelings. I realized that the place I live in is where I withdraw into myself, where I can be spoiled at times, and where I feel special.
I found this contemplation pleasing and continued to ponder it for a few more days. Not all experiences may be pleasant. There can be sadness, painful things as well. We may have behaviors that are not accepted by those around us. Even if we repeatedly shout, “I am here,” no one may hear us, which can lead to a sense of loneliness. We may experience arguments and feel unhappy. We may face scolding and even receive punishment. Reflecting on these things can bring us sorrow, but we must not forget that everyone can experience these emotions.
What scents does home evoke? When I asked myself this question, certain aromas wafted into my nose. The smell of my eraser while studying, the delightful aroma of my mother’s freshly baked cake, the scent of the bread my father brought home during Ramadan, the fragrance of cologne we offered to guests during holidays…
Then I reached this conclusion: Home is the safest space where I encompass my life. Sometimes we may face challenging times. We may have experienced losses and separations within that home. To cope with them, we turn to our family. In fact, we learn about life right there. When we make mistakes, we rectify them at home or find acceptance for our faults. We learn the intricacies of maturity within those walls. What makes a home meaningful and deeply resonant in our lives is the experiences we have within it.
Thinking is a habit that leads a person to maturity and virtuousness. Have a nice contemplation!
